What is “latent value”?
Latent - (of a quality or state) existing but not yet developed or manifest; hidden or concealed. (Oxford Dictionary)
Each business has a hypothetical ceiling of value. It should not be controversial to say that this is a higher value than the actual business itself; because there is always room for improvement.
Latent value is value that is available but not yet found, it is the gap between reality and what is possible. It is what is left after the easy wins have been had. It is the value that is locked up in divisional, functional, psychological, educational, spatial and temporal silos.
How is latent value “unlocked”?
The ironic thing is that quite often value that is latent now, is obvious once uncovered. We call this “uncommon sense”.
But while obvious post-fact, it is often quite difficult to find. This is because it is very difficult to overcome a silo by yourself. Local optimisation, optimisation within your area of understanding, will only get you so far.
Overcoming silos requires a systems approach, understanding the full economic, technical and technological value chain. It is not common for someone to have a deep understanding of all three elements. Because of this there is a need to work in teams with different backgrounds, to learn from each other, communicate well and be open to being challenged on your assumptions. As simple as this seems in writing, in practice it has proved to be extremely difficult. Every day we work to improve our ability to unlock latent value.
